Get Real

Choose a few break-through ideas to advance; test with stakeholders

The next step adds convergent thinking at its best.  More often than not, a coalescing happens naturally around one or more of the breakthrough “Aha” ideas. If that convergence hasn’t happened naturally, practitioners lead the designers through one or more processes whereby they choose a few ideas most likely to dramatically advance the Definition of Success.

These become the skeleton of the new Design, and are fleshed out more if time permits.  Designers are asked for their best ideas ideas on how the new design might work in practice.

The product of the Get Crazy and Get Real phases is akin to a High-level Architect’s Drawing of what might be.  It does not have all the details filled in, but designers believe that it is strategically aligned with Success.

In the final part of an optimal Get Real step, this Architect’s Drawing is taken before a group of stakeholders.  Any number of stakeholders can participate and it is wise to get a wide range of perspectives.  The stakeholders are asked to “kick the tires” on the design.  This does not mean they are asked to approve or disapprove.   They are asked to provide what they like, as well as what they would most like to see improved.  This stakeholder feedback is taken back to a reconvened Lab, if time permits, and the Lab product is adjusted.
